Apples

Do you know what kind of apple you like best?

Last week we visited our local farmers market. We love to go there. Usually, we go around twice. The first time through, we just look to see what all is there and get samples. The second time we choose foods to buy. Our trip last week was actually about a watermelon. We're pretty well hooked on watermelon smoothies around here.

But you can't walk through the farmers market and just buy a watermelon. We also got grapes and green beans. Shredded mozzarella and bruschetta (which were fabulous on tortilla chips!). And apples.

When I pushed the cart around the last turn, I realized we'd lost Michael somewhere. Now usually, I lose Daniel somewhere, but that day it was Michael. I was just starting to back up the cart, when he turned the corner with a bag full of apples and a grin. I knew that he knew we already had a bag of apples in the fridge at home. So I tipped my head a bit to the side and silently asked, 'what are those for?'

He had an idea, he said. He bought one each of six different kinds of apples.

Gala
Granny Smith
Golden Delicious
Red Delicious
McIntosh
Fuji

Back at home, Brenna created a chart to record our ratings. Michael chopped each apple into four parts and labeled them by number. As we sampled each apple, he recorded our 1-5 rating on Brenna's chart.

Daniel rated every apple a 5.

The funny thing about the ratings - each one of us chose a different apple as our favorite. For me, it was Red Delicious. For Michael it was Granny Smith. Brenna picked Golden Delicious, I think.

If you're dipping the apples in butterscotch-caramel, however, Daniel's ratings are just fine. Every apple works!

We have an apple tree in our front yard that grows Anna Apples so those are our favorites because they're free :D
